For four years, the Nigeria Company Law Cases, NCLC, a specialized law report, was under intensive research. The book which was published recently covers judgments of courts, especially the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court on Company Law cases from 1957-2016.
By Adebayo Sowemimo
The NCLC book comes in six volumes of over 6,000 pages. It is intended to be a one-stop shop on Court judgments on company Law cases and disputes arising from the interpretation, application and operations of the Companies and Allied Matters Act Laws of the Federation 2004 and its predecessor, the Companies Act 1968.
The reported cases on major areas/ topics on Company Law including the qualifications, duties, and powers of Company Secretaries, Company Directors, Liquidators, Receiver /Managers and Shareholders.
The magazine gathered that since the book got published the responses from lawyers, especially those who specialize in corporate law practice have been quite amazing. Many SANs have commended the author for a job well done.
No doubt, The NCLC is a veritable research material for academic lawyers because it covers judgments of courts from the Colonial era to the Independence era to the Republican era, to the Military era and now.
For lawyers in practice, it is quite useful. The judgments are cited as authorities to support their legal positions. In-House solicitors find NCLC very useful while writing legal opinions.
On the controversy surrounding the call for the whittling down of the EFCC powers to purely investigative, I am of the firm opinion that the EFCC should concern itself more with investigations of financial crimes and leave the prosecution thereof to another arm or agency of government. This will invariably make the commission more focused and result oriented. The cases that are sometimes thrown out for want of evidence or diligent prosecution on the part of the Commission will be reduced if not totally eliminated, the author/editor-in-chief stated.
The Publisher, Alexander Payne & Co and the Editor -in -Chief, Bamidele Albert Adeleye says it is their 4th publication. According to him We published: Intellectual Property Law Reports 1917-2011(six volumes) ;Supreme Court Judgements on Evidence 1951-2011(seven volumes) and Supreme Court Judgments on Lands 1907-2013 (six volumes).
