The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, was remarkable filled with Journalists who came to hear what Comptroller Abdulahi Kaila has to say in his first press briefing since assumption of office on March 18, 2026 as Customs Area Controller, Seme Command.

Without any euphoria Kaila who was accompanied by senior officers of the Command, announced a major breakthrough in revenue generation and the Command’s anti-smuggling operations and noted that the Command, recorded ₦9.8 billion in revenue collection. An amount the Area Controller says was ₦700million higher or a 448 percent increase in revenue compared to the same period in 2025.

Kaila also stated how as part of the Command’s anti-smuggling drive, the Command within two months intercepted 800 parcels of suspected Cannabis Sativa, several cartons of unregistered pharmaceutical products, including codeine-based syrups and sexual enhancement drugs without NAFDAC certification. Other intercepted items are 2000 bags of rice, 103 kegs of 30 litres of PMS and vegetabe Oil with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦501 million.

Despite the seizures, Kaila noted that the Seme border corridor remains strategic to regional trade under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme and the African Continental Free Trade Area, stressing that the Command remains committed to lawful trade facilitation while tackling economic sabotage.

Speaking further, Comptroller Kaila said the Command achievement is attributed to growth in operational reforms, enhanced compliance measures, officers’ commitment, team work, intelligence drive, aggressive anti smuggling process, Regulatory Documentation and improved stakeholder engagement. Other reasons Comptroller Kaila gave for the impressive record was encouragement and professionalism from the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, PhD which he says made his job much easier. Indeed, Comptroller Kaila has every reason to smile as he took pressmen round the seized items.
