Watching several world leaders speak glowingly of the triumph of good over evil at the June 6, commemoration of the Allied landing on Normandy 70 years ago to herald the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II, it was impossible not to feel sympathy for Angela Merkel, Germany’s Chancellor, who was there throughout the ceremony.
